Maine Standard Biofuels
How do you spend your days? What are your passions? What is your occupation?
I'm currently employed at Maine Standard Biofuels, a bio-refinery based in Portland, ME that upcycles used cooking oil into biodiesel, heating oil and a line of bio-based cleaners and degreasers. When I'm not at work, I prefer to spend my time immersed in some of the things I'm passionate about, whether it be surfing, flyfishing, snowboarding or getting lost in a good book!
Explain your connection to the ocean. How does it influence your life?
I grew up near the coast of southern Maine and always enjoyed spending time at the beach. I started surfing around the age of 13 and that's when my passion for the ocean really became an integral part of who I am today. Years later I found a love for saltwater flyfishing while living in Savannah, GA and exploring the coastal marshes there. Now, not a day goes by where I don't think about being out on the water!
The mission of Saltwater Classroom is to bring together young students, as well as learners of all ages, through an innovative approach to ocean education. How does this apply to your experience?
I believe the education of young students is paramount when it comes to making positive changes to our planet's future.
What are your earliest ocean memories?
Exploring tide pools as a toddler (typically in nothing but a pair of whitey tighties!).
If you had to pick one thing, what is your favorite aspect of the ocean? We know, it's a broad question.
I love the ocean's ability to bring a sense of calm to my day, even at it's most wild I find peace in the ebb and flow of waves.
Is there a dream ocean destination on your list? Where would you travel to next?
The coast of Portugal!
