How do you spend your days? What are your passions? What is your occupation?
I’m currently a senior partner with AxisTD, an organization that specializes in organizational and employee development through assessment, training and coaching. I’m a retired federal employee, with 25 years at NASA and National Park Service in various Human Resources positions. I’m passionate about issues relating to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice.
Explain your connection to the ocean. How does it influence your life?
If I’m being honest, I’m really not sure how it influences my life. Other than vacations in beach communities, I’ve never had much access.
The mission of Saltwater Classroom is to bring together young students, as well as learners of all ages, through an innovative approach to ocean education. How does this apply to your experience?
I think learners like me, such as those who traditionally haven’t had experience and access, would be great to target for ocean education. Structuring ocean education to relate to as wide as audience as possible is necessary. Maybe relate it to environmental justice is good for those in inland and more urban communities. I definitely look forward to learning more through my involvement with Saltwater Classroom.
What are your earliest ocean memories?
I grew up in Michigan so my earliest memories were really visiting the Great Lakes with family. I honestly don’t remember my first time visiting an ocean community, but I know I was an adult.
If you had to pick one thing, what is your favorite aspect of the ocean? We know, it's a broad question.
As an adult, I’ve had the opportunity to visit many of the National Parks that border coastal communities such as Canaveral, Biscayne, Cape Hatteras and US Virgin Islands. When visiting, I’m always struck by the tranquility and sense of calm.
Is there a dream ocean destination on your list? Where would you travel to next?
I guess my dream destination is one of the islands of Hawaii. My next destination will be Oxnard, CA for a work event.
